Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a very versatile plastic as it is clear and tough. It is used for a number of applications including vandal & child proof windows, machine guards and in multi-wall form as conservatory roofing among many other uses. One of the key advantages of this material is its strength combined with the lightweight aspect of the material. Although acrylic is 17% stronger than glass, this material is practically unbreakable and is about 10 times stronger than glass. Moulded items such as Compact discs are made from it to offer strength and flexibility. Very clear forms of this material are also available so that it can be used to make eyeglasses because of its excellent transparency, durability and high infractive index. This means that it bends light to a far greater degree than glass and other plastic for the same thickness. Since prescription lenses bend light to correct vision glasses made from this material can be far thinner than glass or conventional plastic, this is why this is an ideal material for heavy prescriptions. Polycarbonate is available in clear in many thicknesses from 1mm to 12mm and to a limited extent up to 15mm. There are some thicknesses available in Bronze. Opal and it is also produced with an opaque or embossed finish in clear which is safer to use as shower screens and doors as they are more likely to not break when fallen against. Sometimes Grey or Black material will be available.
