Perspex is a brand of Acrylic that has become synonomous with the generic name Acrylic in West Europe. It made by from a thermoplastic that was first produced in 1930's in Germany. It is the most common and reliable alternative to glass, this is because it is a very hard material and it is therefore tough to shatter. There are many uses for this material that include making medical items as it has good degree of compatibility with human tissue. As it is hard and transparent it has industrial uses such as safety goggles, machine safety guards etc. This material has unique properties. One is because in can be moulded into any shape. Unlike some of the other plastics that are currently on the market this plastic can be made into sheets during manufacturing. Its chemical name is Poly methyl methacylate or PMMA for short. This plastic can be used in the making of mouldings and sheets with superb clarity and effect. It is available in a large range of colours and surface finishes and in many thicknesses from less than 1 mm up to 400mm. It is cheap, transparent, tough and flexible. This material is manufactured under many different brand names such as Perspex, Plexiglas, Policril, Altuglas, Acryliglas and several other ranges throughout the world..
